Arsenal have discussed the possibility of signing Juventus midfielder Arthur Melo on loan as they look to enhance their midfield options, reports said. The Brazilian, who arrived in Europe with Barcelona after making headlines with Gremio, fell off the radar during his time in Turin.

Barcelona signed Arthur from the South American club in 2018 before sending him to Juventus in 2020 as Miralem Pjanic headed the other way.

The Italian giants paid a whopping £66m for his services and that failed to pay dividends based on his performance.

With Juventus now looking to clear the decks, Arthur has been designated as one of the players who could leave should a suitable bid arrive.

Speaking ahead of the FA Cup third round match at Nottingham Forest, Arteta made it clear that Arsenal would spend the month if the opportunity arose.

“If he is the right player, we can afford it and we can do what we want to do, we will discuss it and come up with the best possible decision. We are open,” he said.

“I think with the amount of things and the way we want to develop the team, we have to maximize each window in many different ways.

“We are on alert. (Head coach) Edu and his team are working hard because we know exactly what we have to do.

“Whether we can make it happen in January or the summer is a different question and it’s about a lot of other things but we’re right there.”
